We play bocce on a pea gravel beach in Maine. Despite the abusive playing conditions, the set has held up well. I wish the balls were a bit larger (107mm) and heavier (closer to regulation size and weight). The palino (jack) is equally small; it is the size of a golf ball. Despite the photo depiction, the palino is neutrally colored, so it is easy to lose sight of it in the sand. A golf ball would be just as good. Much more expensive sets would not hold up to the abuse this set does. If you have a family, get this set.
