From 10 feet away, this set looks pretty spiffy. When you've got mallet in hand, however, you'll feel all the corners cut in the manufacturing of this set. The mallet shafts have decorative grooves cut into them, but they're unfinished and splintery feeling. The shafts have little plastic widgets attached to the end that connects to the head. So, the weak point is the two little tiny screws that hold the breakable plastic widgets to the handles. ChesseX offers eleven (11) different colors of 7-die Polyhedral sets, one of the best selections of gamer dice offered and excellent for each player to have their own distinctive set. I prefer the green, but have a blue set as well. But with so many choices it is easy to pick your favorite or an easy compromise.

I prefer the translucent to solid color die mainly because there is something bout the slightly luminous background of the translucent plastic that sets off the black numbers better, making them easier to read and providing a more pleasant gaming experience.

Accuracy on random number generation is important. I got my undergraduate statistics students to test the ChesseX die with 1,000 throws, and the quality report came back: EXCELLENT. These are die that throw random numbers from their possibility set.

The slightly rounded edges make for clean throws and firm resting stops, although the inherent composition of the plastic makes them bounce pretty easily off a Formica table. These die work better on cloth surfaces.

I wonder if anyone who has purchased this product and written a five star reeview, has actually used it. I just bought one for use with my clients and I was quite disappointed for a few reasons.

First of all, the colors of the blocks do not even closely resemble the corresponding colors on the cards. This is confusing to my eight-year olds, as it is for me. Also, the game should come with some sort of form for aligning the blocks like the Jenga product does. It is very difficult to do so without such a guide.

Lastly, the box itself should be a size built to contain all the blocks exactly with no free space left over. Because it isn't, the blocks tend to shift when you remove the card pack and invert them to place them on a surface, thereby causing the column to colapse.

The self-esteem questions themselves are generally good, but there are too many "make up your own" questions.

My husband and I play this game very often. Sometimes, every night. It is exciting, challenging, and even for mature grown-ups like us, we still learn with fun.
But, the drawback is the mediocre quality of the game.
First the size of the slots is so narrow that it takes for ever to place the dices before starting the game.
Second, sometimes the hourglass does not get started, unless we tap it.So we start playing and wait for the time to be up, until we realize that it never got started.
Lastly, after a few years of use, the blue letters start fading away.
We bought one in France, I think it is a different maker (Parker?): the slots are less tight, so the dices are put in place in a bliss; the hourglass works perfectly and so far the blue letters are not faded away, but we play it less often.

"The Gathering Storm" is Rio Grande's first expansion for Race for the Galaxy a card game where players eke out a space civilization by exploring, conquering, settling and developing technologies.

Players simultaneously select a role card. The roles are respectively: Explore, Develop, Settle, Consume and Produce. The role cards are revealed and resolved in role card order. If you play a role card, you get the bonus for playing it. If you didn't play a role card (i.e. your opponent played it), you get to use the role's general effect. For example: if you play "Explore", you draw 3 cards and may keep 2; otherwise you draw 2 cards and may keep 1.

Players play planet cards during the Settle phase and technologies during the Develop phase. Once a player has played 12 cards (called a tableux) the game will end. Players score points for their planets, developments and for consuming goods. The player with the highest score wins.

With experienced players, this game can play quickly (around 30 minutes or less). However, the iconography of the cards is counterintuitve and thus the learning curve is surprisingly steep. This is a minor consideration if you are a hardcore gamer. But it should be noted: Race for the Galaxy makes a poor gateway game for your non-gaming friends and family.

This expansion adds more cards and a couple of new mechanics. The new cards are merely new planets/developments. The new mechanics include a solo version of the game. A player may play against a "robot". I find this to be quite silly. Race for the galaxy is already a game of solitaire even when you have 4 people playing. The clunky robot mechanic is something that only the most diehard Race fans will ever use.

The expansion also includes objective tiles. Players can score bonus points for completing these. This is a nice addition. You can plan your long term strategy around scoring these objectives. Also, the expansion includes enough pieces to play up to 5 people.

My biggest gripe with Race for the Galaxy is that there is virtually no player interaction. There is no conflict. No auctions, no bidding mechanics, no way to screw over your opponents who have a lead. This is effectively a four player solitaire game with interstellar chrome.

Race for the Galaxy hits our gaming table with some regularity. It's a quick game and thus is a decent filler. But if you want an interstellar game with player interaction you will need to look elsewhere.Get more detail about Race For The Galaxy: The Gathering Storm.
