We've played this with our 8-yr-old (second grade) son and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Without a doubt, the game offers plenty of opportunities for critical thinking, planning, review of basic math (addition, subtraction), practice in grade-level or difficult math (multiplication, division, strings of operations), and introduction of challenging concepts like equivalent fractions, multiplying/dividing fractions, etc. We do a lot of interacting with each other's tiles to come up with multiple scenarios in order to use those as teaching moments.

Gameplay and setup is very easy (and one can also easily modify rules for simpler play) and while one wishes for wooden and hard plastic trays rather than thin plastic, or tiles rather than cardboard numbers/symbols, well, those days seem to be a bit behind us and the tradeoff in cost may not be worth it for some. Turns can last a while, especially as the board begins to fill up and it gets more difficult to fit equations in; this is not an in-and-out-in 20-minutes family game. But we just leave it out and finish at a more convenient time if we go long. Earlier comments mention the problem with getting a zero and a multiplier and then being able to "run the table" so to speak, but that's a rare occurrence and one could always just make a rule where zeroes can't be used with the times symbol--problem solved.

I have at least one murder mystery party at my house each year. In the past I have purchased the mysteries [...] or written them myself. For Christmas, my parents gave me A Taste for Wine and Murder and I was very excited to try a new format. Because I hold these parties fairly often, my friends are familiar with how these mysteries are played and are not easily confused. We played this game with the 6 suspects and two extra characters. My primary complaints are:

1 - The extra characters had very odd parts and the suspects had no response to their accusations. There were confused looks all around the table whenever those characters spoke up.
2 - Characters contradicted themselves from one round to the next. For example, round one: "this guy is like my son". Round two: "He's a twit." No logic whatsoever.
3 - The booklets seem like such a great idea, but it was very unclear about how the characters should use them. The dialogue would end and we would all stare at each other and have to "break character" to figure out how to proceed. "You want to go first? Or should I?"
4 - We still don't really know who did it. When we tried to play the last track of the cd, it went all wonky. No scratches on the disk...it seemed like the original recording used to make the cd was scratched. Very unfortunate, but we had had so much wine at that point, we just laughed at the poor quality of this game.

Before we started, one of the guests asked if we could save the game materials so that his mom could borrow them to have a party of her own. At the end of the night, he said, "Nevermind...I think she can find something better."

Luckily, I have such a fun group of friends we had a great time despite the confusion created by the game. "Almost" every time you say? Unfortunately, this game is seriously unbalanced in a 4 or 6 player game. It is at its best with 3 or 5 players. Why? Because depending on the human resource dials on the gameboard and where they are pointing at the mid-game point, there will be either 2 cylons vs 2 humans or 1 cylon vs 3 humans (for a 4 player game); 3 cylons vs 3 humans or 2 cylons vs 4 humans in a 6 player game. With half the players as cylons, the humans are severely outmatched, and with more humans they can walk all over the cylon player(s). This mechanic is negated in a 3 or 5 player game, in which there is a set number of cylon players by the mid-game point.

The best part of this game is definitely the deceptive nature of how players manipulate other players. If you're a cylon in disguise your best bet is to sow distrust amongst the other human players and if possible get them to accuse each other of betrayal and send each other to prison while you subtlely ruin their chances of progressing and attacking their resources. If you are a human player, you are constantly suspicious of other players, which makes for some interesting choices as you will sometimes make reckless decisions to imprison a suspected cylon or speed up the game in order to keep the cylons from having more turns to mess you up.

Basically this game presents a ticking clock for players. When the clock reaches zero, the choices they have made will culminate into victory or loss. But what you do, if you're human or cylon, from start to finish is almost always satisfying because most playthroughs are won or lost by the skin of your teeth, creating a enjoyably tense atmosphere. First of all, I have only played this with my wife. We are very competitive and love the sci fi/fantasy genre so we thought a co-op game would be great. This game does not disappoint. It is so much fun, and a few other reviews said that there were too many nuances to all the cards and they had to keep getting rulings on the meanings of what had to happen. This is nonsense. The updated rulebook that ships with this game goes over everything you will ever need. You just need to read it before you play. This means give yourself an hour to familiarize yourself with the rulebook before you plan on playing. Beyond that, keep in mind a usual game takes about 4 hours, so you will want to break it up over the course of a few nights. It also takes up quite a bit of space, so we tend to use our extra table (we used our dining table the first game and had to eat on the coffee table for 2 days afterwards).

Pros - extremely fun, co-op gameplay. Lots of twists and turns. a good bit of strategy is involved, I also feel the length is a pro.
Cons - the co-op isnt really dependent on one another - you can really go off and do your own things for the most part, the only truly co-op bits are that you are working for the same goal, and you can trade items if you are in the same place.

Lowest Price Go Game with Wood Board

I had been wanting to play this game for quite some time, however living in a less culturally diverse area had made it very difficult. We found this board at the mall, for about the same price, more or less, and picked it up, It's been over 3 years now, I've used it at school and home, and it's still in good shape, It's even been used in Cultural game nights, and mini competitions at school I have tossed out the old plastic baggies that the stones were in and replaced them with tuperwears. I still keep the board in the plastic bag it came in when i bought it , when it's not in use, And so far it's still in great shape!
I must admit, the stones and board are a bit small. It's hard for big hands like mine to navigate the board without knocking around the pieces a bit. all in all however this can be more or less worked around with a little practice.

So, lets get down to business, Do you want this board? or another one? If you're not sure if you will like go in the first place, get this version, It's the best price for what you get. The rest of the cheap boards seem to be either cardboard or tiny travel boards( yes even smaller than this one!) and anything else that's worth buying seems a bit expensive for the first time buyer.

As for me, I have this board, and I'm ready for an upgrade, But I'm still going to keep it around as a travel/ school board, And i'll use the new one at home where it's safe! (especially after investing as much as it will cost me to buy it!) This bow is impressive - the arrows really blast off the bow with a nice audible "poof" sound. It's strong enough to leave a sting short range, and the arrows fly straight and level. I took it outside and flexed it all the way and it really sailed. It's advertised as going up to a hundred feet. I didn't measure it, but it was a good distance.
One strange feature is the blue "quiver" that holds the other two arrows while not in use. the weird thing about is that you have to squeeze the arrows out of shape to get them in and while they're clipped in, the shaft of the arrow remains squeezed out of shape, so that the arrows will not stay perfectly cylindrical if you use the clip. But so far I can't detect that this has affected the performance of the arrows' flights. It just seems a bit odd that the clip is too small for the arrows.
